Fr. Julius will be here the weekend of August 6th and 7th speaking on behalf of support for the Diocese of Kitui, Kenya.
The Diocese of Kitui is large, growing and vibrant. It began in 1956 with four parishes and less than 2,000 Catholics and has since grown to include 29 parishes with about 330,000 baptized Catholics. It is a leader in providing charitable services for all those who live in its boundaries. Many of the region’s hospitals are Catholic. The diocese provides water and food relief in times of economic hardship and famine, and in response to the Covid-19 pandemic it provided food, masks, soap, and other necessities to those
affected.
The Diocese of Kitui is located in a semi-arid zone south of the equator, an area in which rainfall is unpredictable, and the Sahara Desert about 100 miles southeast of Nairobi. The main source of income for many people is small-scale farming of crops and livestock. With limited infrastructure, some residents routinely walk miles to the nearest water access point to draw water for cooking, cleaning, drinking and bathing. Many of these water access points are seasonal ponds or rivers, shared by humans, livestock, and wild animals. In times of drought, food security is also a concern.
The Diocese of Kitui asks for your support to help it continue to provide for the physical and spiritual needs of all those within its boundaries. Money raised through this year’s appeal will be allocated according to need. This includes famine and drought relief, fees and support for seminarians, school fees for students, youth support programs and the Sister Maria Goretti Center for Rehabilitation for Women.
